Reading a marking guide properly
Most candidates use marking guides only to count how many they got right. That wastes most of what a guide contains. The guide also tells you how marks are split within a question, and that is usually where grades are won.
Look at how many marks attach to each step. A question worth five marks almost never rewards a single correct final answer; it rewards the working that gets there. Candidates who write only the answer routinely lose three or four of those marks even when the answer is right.
Look also at the verbs. State wants one line. Explain wants a reason. Describe wants a sequence. Account for wants a cause. Answering a describe question with a state answer costs marks no matter how accurate you are.
After marking a paper, pick the question where you lost the most marks and rewrite your answer in full, using the guide’s structure. Rewriting one answer properly teaches more than attempting three new papers carelessly.
