Why a pre-mock is worth sitting early
A pre-mock sat two or three months before the examination is not meant to produce a good score. It is meant to produce a useful one. Sitting a full paper while there is still term left tells you which topics you have genuinely learned and which you only recognise, and it does so while there is still time to act.
Candidates often avoid this because an early low mark is discouraging. That is the wrong way round: a low mark in August that you act on is worth far more than a comfortable mark in November that you cannot.
Treat the first attempt as diagnosis. Write down the topics you could not attempt at all, separately from the ones you attempted and got wrong. Those two lists need different work. Topics you could not attempt need teaching or reading. Topics you attempted and got wrong usually need practice, not re-reading.
Building a revision timetable around papers
A timetable built around topics tends to collapse, because topics have no natural end point and it is always possible to feel unprepared. A timetable built around papers has a clear shape: one paper attempted, one paper marked, one weak topic repaired, repeat.
Two papers a week per examinable subject, properly marked, is a sustainable pace for most candidates in the final term. More than that and the marking gets skipped, which is the part that actually teaches.
